When choosing sunglasses for children, safety, durability and comfort come first. Two frame materials come up again and again: TPEE (thermoplastic polyester elastomer) and TR90 (a thermoplastic nylon). Both are excellent for kids, and OLIVIO&CO uses each where it works best. Here is how they compare.
TPEE
TPEE is a thermoplastic elastomer that behaves partly like rubber and partly like plastic. It is used in demanding parts such as automotive components, and in eyewear for its softness and resilience.
- Soft and flexible: bends and springs back, which suits babies and toddlers.
- Durable: resists wear and tear from rough handling.
- Lightweight: comfortable for long wear.
- Resists chemicals and weather: holds up to sunscreen, salt water and pool water.
TR90
TR90 is a thermoplastic nylon, originally developed in Switzerland, widely used in sports and children's eyewear.
- Very flexible: twists and bends without breaking.
- Impact-resistant: handles drops and knocks well.
- Very light: often lighter than other plastics.
- Skin-friendly: commonly described as hypoallergenic.
TPEE vs TR90 at a glance
- Feel: TPEE is softer and more rubbery; TR90 is firmer and holds its shape more precisely.
- Flexibility and durability: both bend rather than snap, which is what matters most for kids.
- Weight and comfort: both are light enough for all-day wear.
- Price: TPEE frames are often a little more affordable; it varies by brand.
Which is right for your child?
- Babies and toddlers: a soft, very flexible frame is kindest on small faces and survives being chewed, dropped and sat on.
- Active kids, youth and teens: a firm-but-flexible frame keeps its shape and fit during running, climbing and sport.
