Why Toddlers Should Start Wearing Sunglasses Early

Sunglasses are often seen as an adult accessory, but toddlers may need them even more. Their eyes are still developing and they spend lots of time outdoors. Here is why it's worth starting early, and how to make the habit stick.

Eye health and development

Young children's eyes are more sensitive to UV radiation than adults' because the lens inside the eye is clearer and lets more UV reach the retina. Too much UV can cause short-term problems like photokeratitis and contributes to cataracts and macular degeneration later in life. Sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays shield those developing eyes.

Long-term benefits

UV exposure adds up over a lifetime, so protection in the early years counts. Children who wear sunglasses from toddlerhood are also more likely to keep the habit as they grow, just like sunscreen and hats.

Safety and comfort

Bright sun makes toddlers squint and rub their eyes, and it can hide the edge of a step or a slide. Sunglasses cut brightness and glare, so little ones see more comfortably and move around more confidently at the park, on walks or in the stroller.

Five tips to build the habit

  • Lead by example: wear your own sunglasses whenever you go out together.
  • Let them choose: a favourite colour makes a big difference.
  • Be consistent: sunglasses go on with shoes and sunscreen, every time.
  • Prioritise comfort: light, flexible frames that fit well won't get pulled off.
  • Praise them: notice when they keep them on, and explain why it matters.

Starting early is a simple habit that protects your child's eyes for years to come.
