How to Keep Sunglasses on Active Toddlers and Kids

You put the sunglasses on. Thirty seconds later they're on the ground, in the sandpit or in the dog's mouth. Every parent knows the battle. The good news: most kids who won't keep sunglasses on are telling you something about the fit, the feel or the routine. Here's how to fix each one.

1. Get the size right

The number one reason kids pull sunglasses off is that they don't fit. Frames that are too big slide down the nose; frames that are too small pinch behind the ears. Buy for your child's current age, not one to grow into. Our kids' size guide by age includes three quick fit tests.

2. Choose light, soft, flexible frames

Heavy or rigid frames press on little noses and ears. Look for:

  • Very light frames that kids forget they're wearing.
  • Soft materials for babies and toddlers. Our Toddler & Baby frames are made from soft TPEE.
  • Flexible frames for older kids that bend rather than snap. Our kids, youth and sport frames are TR90.
  • Lenses that don't touch the eyelashes.

3. Pick a wrap-style or sport fit for busy kids

Close-fitting sport sunglasses hug the face and stay put during running, climbing and cycling. They also block light from the sides.

4. Add a strap

A soft adjustable strap holds sunglasses in place during the busiest play, and stops them getting lost. Our strap and silicone accessory sets are designed for ages 3 and up. For babies and young toddlers, rely on a good fit and shade instead.

5. Make it a habit

  • Start early: children who wear sunglasses from toddlerhood fight them less later.
  • Same routine every time: sunglasses go on with shoes and sunscreen.
  • Wear yours too: kids copy what they see.
  • Let them choose: a favourite colour makes them want to wear it.
  • Keep a spare in the bag or car so there's always a pair to hand.

6. Make it comfortable for the eyes

Polarized lenses cut glare, so kids squint less and are happier to keep them on. And always check for 100% UV protection: that's the whole point of keeping them on.
