Do Kids' Sunglasses Need to Be Polarized?

Polarized sunglasses are a big help for children: they cut glare, reduce squinting and make bright days more comfortable. But polarization is not the same as UV protection. Here is what each does, when polarized lenses matter most for kids and what to look for in a pair.

UV protection comes first

The most important feature of any child's sunglasses is 100% UVA and UVB protection, often labelled UV400. A child's eye lets more UV through to the retina than an adult's, and UV damage adds up over a lifetime. Polarization is a comfort and clarity feature on top of that.

What polarized lenses do for kids

Light reflecting off flat surfaces like water, sand, snow and pavement turns into glare. A polarizing filter blocks that reflected light while letting the rest through.

  • Less squinting: children are more likely to keep sunglasses on when their eyes feel comfortable.
  • Clearer vision: colours and edges look sharper without reflected haze.
  • Less eye fatigue on long days at the beach, pool or park.

When polarized lenses help most

  • At the beach, pool, lake or on a boat.
  • On sunny pavements, playgrounds and car rides.
  • In snow on bright days.

When non-polarized is fine

Non-polarized sunglasses with UV400 lenses still protect a child's eyes from UV. Polarized lenses can also make some LCD screens look dark and change how some surfaces look, which matters more for teens reading phones, kids on the golf course or skiers spotting icy patches than for young children at play.

What to look for in kids' sunglasses

  • 100% UV protection on the label or product page.
  • Polarized lenses for glare, especially near water.
  • Flexible frames that bend instead of breaking.
  • Impact-resistant lenses, never glass.
  • The right size for your child's age, so they stay on.
  • A strap for very active kids. Our strap sets are for ages 3 and up.
