Many parents wonder whether sunglasses are safe or necessary for a baby as young as three months. Here is what the guidance says, how to protect a young baby's eyes and how to choose sunglasses once your baby is ready.
Why babies' eyes need protection
A baby's eyes are still developing, and the lens inside the eye is very clear, so more UV light reaches the retina than in an adult eye. The skin around the eyes is also thin and burns easily. UV damage is cumulative, so protecting eyes early pays off for life.
Guidance by age
- Under six months: the American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping babies out of direct sunlight. Shade comes first: stroller canopies, umbrellas, trees and lightweight clothing. Sunglasses can add protection when shade isn't possible.
- Six months and older: babies can spend time in the sun with protection, including hats, sunscreen on exposed skin and sunglasses made for babies.
How to choose sunglasses for your baby
- 100% UV protection: look for UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB on the label.
- Proper fit and coverage: the lenses should cover the eyes and some of the skin around them, without touching the eyelashes.
- Durability: soft, flexible frames and impact-resistant lenses. Never glass.
- Comfort: lightweight, with nothing that pinches the nose or ears.
Other ways to protect your baby from the sun
- Shade: stay out of direct sun when UV is strongest, roughly 10am to 4pm.
- Hats: a wide brim shades the face, eyes, neck and ears.
- Sunscreen: for babies over six months, a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on exposed skin.
Frequently asked questions
Are baby sunglasses really necessary?
Shade is the first line of defence for young babies. Once your baby spends time outdoors in bright light, sunglasses with 100% UV protection add important protection.
Can my baby wear polarized sunglasses?
Yes. Polarized lenses reduce glare from water, sand and pavement, which makes bright days more comfortable. Make sure they also block 100% of UV.
How do I keep sunglasses on my baby?
Choose a light, well-fitting pair, put them on before going out so they become routine, and wear yours too. Our strap sets are designed for ages 3 and up.
