How Do Sunglasses Protect Your Eyes?

Sunglasses are more than a fashion accessory. Good ones block ultraviolet (UV) radiation, cut glare and make bright days more comfortable for your eyes. Here is how they work and what to look for.

What are UV rays?

UV rays are invisible radiation from the sun. A little sun is good for us, but too much UV damages the eyes and the delicate skin around them. Over a lifetime, UV exposure is linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and skin cancer of the eyelids.

There are three types. UVA penetrates deepest and makes up most of the UV reaching the ground. UVB is higher energy and burns the surface of the eye and skin. UVC is absorbed by the atmosphere.

How sunglasses provide protection

UV protection

The most important job of sunglasses is blocking UVA and UVB. Look for lenses labelled UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB protection.

Polarized lenses

Polarized lenses contain a filter that blocks light reflected off flat surfaces like water, snow and roads. Less glare means clearer vision and less squinting.

Lens tints

Grey lenses keep colours true for everyday wear. Brown and amber lenses boost contrast, which helps for sports and changing light. Tint doesn't change UV protection.

Coverage and fit

Frames that fit close to the face, with larger lenses, block more light coming in from the sides and below.

Benefits of wearing sunglasses

  • Eye health: blocking UV lowers the long-term risk of cataracts and macular degeneration and prevents photokeratitis, a painful sunburn of the cornea.
  • Comfort: less squinting and eye strain on bright days.
  • Safety: less glare means clearer vision when driving, cycling or skiing.
  • Recovery: eyes are extra sensitive after some eye surgeries, so follow your doctor's advice on wearing sunglasses.
  • Style: a pair you love is a pair you'll actually wear.

Why it starts in childhood

Children spend more time outdoors than most adults, and the lens inside a young eye lets more UV reach the retina. Building the habit early protects their eyes for life. Read more in why kids should wear sunglasses.

Picking the right pair

  • Certified UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB protection.
  • Polarized lenses if you spend time near water, on the road or in snow.
  • A comfortable fit that covers the eyes without slipping.
  • A replacement when lenses are badly scratched or a child outgrows the frame.

Every OLIVIO&CO pair has polarized lenses with 100% UV protection, in sizes for babies through to adults.
